Martha Atienza has received a grant from Centrum Beeldende Kunst (CBK) Rotterdam to conduct research in Hawaii.
The Hawaii Biennial is an opportunity to extend the visit and better understand the complex social, economic and environmental context of Hawaii. When “American commercial and missionary interests, with the collusion of the forces from a US warship” overthrew the last Hawaiian monarch in 1893, resistance towards foreign occupation began. This resistance continues through opposition towards commercial and foreign activities on what is considered ancestral Hawaiian native land and waters.
The research is rooted in the belief that our common island cultures, ancestry, colonial histories and contemporary challenges and potential brings Bantayan Island and Hawaii closer together than geographic proximity may indicate.
